Load handling devices
What are load-handling devices?
A load-handling device is one of the load-handling devices, along with load-bearing devices and slings. According to the definition of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, load-handling devices are "a component or piece of equipment not part of the lifting device that enables the load to be grasped and that is attached between the machine and the load or to the load itself or that is intended to become an integral part of the load and that is placed on the market separately; slings and their components are also considered load-handling devices."
A distinction is made between different types of load-handling devices. Depending on the application, grippers and traverses as well as Coil hooks, Lifting clamps or Loading forks are used.
Selection of a suitable load-handling device
Basically, every conveyor system has at least one Component which serves to support loads. The decisive criteria for selecting a suitable load handling device are:
-
Degree of mechanization of load handling and load release
-
Weight of the goods being transported
-
Protection of the goods to be transported
-
Time of load pickup or release
Who is allowed to check load handling equipment?
Load handling equipment may only be checked by qualified persons (see also the Technical Rules for Operational Safety, TRBS 1203).
The test technicians subject the load-carrying equipment to a visual and functional test and, if necessary, a crack test in accordance with applicable regulations and standards. The following are tested for load-handling equipment:
-
Traverses
-
Telescopic forks
-
Hooks and lifting gear
-
Barrel lifters
-
Clamps and grippers
