What are hydraulic cylinders?

Hydraulic cylinders are powerful linear actuators that operate using pressurized oil or hydraulic fluid to generate high forces for lifting, lowering, or moving loads. A single-acting hydraulic cylinder uses hydraulic pressure in only one direction, while the return stroke is usually achieved by gravity or spring force. In contrast, a double-acting hydraulic cylinder actively moves the piston in both directions using hydraulic pressure, enabling particularly precise control.

In practice, depending on the installation conditions, especially space-saving solutions such as compact hydraulic cylinders are also used, allowing the advantages of hydraulic technology to be utilized even in very limited installation spaces.

Overview of hydraulic cylinder types

In addition to the operating modes — single-acting and double-acting hydraulic cylinders — hydraulic cylinders primarily differ in their design. The most important types include:

Cylinder type Design & features Application Material

Flat cylinder

  • Flat
  • compact design
Ideal for confined installation spaces, low installation height
  • Steel
  • often single-acting

Hollow plunger cylinder

  • Hollow piston rod
Allows tools or components to pass through, e.g. for presses or clamping devices
  • Steel
  • single- or double-acting

Lightweight aluminum cylinder

  • Lightweight aluminum construction
Low weight, suitable for mobile applications and light loads
  • Aluminum
  • usually single-acting

Multi-purpose cylinder

  • Standard cylinder for many applications
Versatile use, usually double-acting, standard stroke
  • Steel
  • single- or double-acting

Heavy-duty cylinder

  • Robust design for high loads
For very high pressures and large forces, e.g. in industry and construction
  • Steel
  • usually double-acting

Telescopic cylinder

  • Multiple pistons
  • telescopically nested design
Very long strokes with minimal installation space, e.g. for lifting or tilting devices
  • Steel
  • single- or double-acting

How to find the right hydraulic cylinder for your application

If you are looking to purchase a hydraulic cylinder, you should first carefully determine which cylinder type reliably meets your requirements. The key factor is the required force: consider the load you want to lift, press, or move. From this, the necessary piston area is derived — and thus the appropriate bore size of the cylinder.

You should also pay attention to the following points:

  • Required stroke: How far does the cylinder need to extend? The stroke must precisely match your installation situation — whether you need a short-stroke cylinder or models with a longer stroke.
  • Operating pressure: Especially for longer cylinders, operating pressure is an important safety factor.
  • Design & installation length: Whether a compact flat cylinder, a robust standard cylinder, or a double-acting two-stage telescopic cylinder — choose the design that fits your available installation space and optimally supports your application.
  • Environmental conditions: Temperature, humidity, or corrosion determine whether a cylinder made of steel, aluminum, or equipped with special seals is the right choice.
  • Operating principle: Do you require a controlled return stroke? In that case, a double-acting cylinder is necessary. For simple applications, a single-acting cylinder may be sufficient.

To find the right hydraulic cylinder, you should define your requirements regarding force, stroke, space constraints, and operating environment as precisely as possible. If you are unsure which cylinder is ideal for your project, our team or the respective manufacturer will be happy to assist you with the selection — simply contact us!

Selecting by load capacity

Load capacity is one of the most important factors when choosing the right hydraulic cylinder. It indicates the maximum force a cylinder can safely generate — usually specified in tonnes (t) or kilonewtons (kN).

The load capacity results from the piston area and the permissible operating pressure. At Globus Hebetechnik, the range extends from smaller cylinders for light assembly work to high-performance models such as a 100-ton hydraulic cylinder, which can reliably handle extreme forces.

To ensure you select the right cylinder, please consider the following:

  • Required load capacity
The cylinder’s load capacity should always be higher than the actual load and should not exceed 80% of the required load. This ensures long service life and safe operation — whether you need a double-acting hydraulic cylinder with 20 t, 30 t, or 40 t capacity.
  • Installation position & operating pressure
The load capacity specified in data sheets usually applies at maximum operating pressure and in a vertical working position. In horizontal or angled applications, the actual load capacity may be reduced.
  • Manufacturer safety ratings
Always check specifications such as permissible buckling force or maximum pressure load to avoid overloads — especially with longer piston rods.
  • Design & application
Depending on the application, the cylinder design can be decisive. A single-acting two-stage telescopic cylinder is suitable for long strokes with limited installation space, while compact or special designs offer different load capacities and application focuses.

Important safety notice!

The load and stroke values stated here represent maximum safety limits. Hydraulic equipment should only be operated at 80% of the specified values!

Applications of hydraulic cylinders

Hydraulic cylinders are used wherever high forces need to be transmitted precisely and reliably. Their range of applications is extremely diverse. Typical areas of application at a glance:

  • Industry & manufacturing: In the hydraulic cylinder industry, cylinders are used in steel mills, rolling mills, chemical plants, concrete plants, and production lines.
  • Mechanical engineering: Whether stamping, pressing, machine tools, or clamping devices in automotive production — hydraulic cylinders enable precise, repeatable processes.
  • Construction & construction machinery: In cranes, excavators, dump trucks, or concrete pumps, heavy loads must be lifted and moved reliably. Robust designs such as hydraulic round cylinders or two-stage telescopic cylinders are frequently used here.
  • Agriculture: Tractors, front loaders, axle supports, or folding mechanisms use hydraulic cylinders for powerful movements under demanding conditions.
  • Recycling & conveying technology: In sorting, baling, or transport systems, cylinders ensure reliable and continuous material movement.
  • Safety & rescue technology: In accident simulations or rescue scenarios, hydraulic cylinders enable realistic and controlled force application.
  • Locks, hydropower & infrastructure: Here, they control gates, flaps, locks, and other heavy components in continuous operation.
  • Amusement parks: Rides such as carousels or platform systems rely on hydraulic movements for safety and dynamic motion.
  • Aerospace & defense technology: In aircraft or armored vehicles, hydraulic cylinders are used for locking systems, pivot mechanisms, or heavy shifting movements.

Hydraulic cylinders can only be used to their full potential when the right accessories and proper control systems are also in place. For the power supply of cylinders, you will find a wide range of manual, electric, and pneumatic options in our hydraulic pumps category — ideal for reliably generating the required operating pressure. If you use cylinders for pressing, bending, or straightening, it is also worth taking a look at our hydraulic presses. There you will find powerful press systems that can be combined with various hydraulic cylinders.

In addition, our hydraulic accessories include useful extensions such as pressure gauges, manifold blocks, or support plates, allowing you to build your system safely and efficiently. Suitable additions are also available for the safe lifting and moving of loads. In the Hoists category, you will find devices such as winches, grippers, or Lever hoists, which provide support wherever loads need to be precisely positioned or lifted. Combined with your hydraulic cylinders, this results in a complete and efficient lifting and positioning system.
