Function of Sling Chains
Sling chains are used in lifting technology as lifting gear to lift, move, or secure heavy loads. They are made of robust, interconnected links and thus connect load-bearing equipment such as crane hooks with corresponding loads like containers or components.
The round steel chains can be assembled into a single strand or multiple strands and then configured with hooks or additional connecting pieces. When lifting, the weight of the load is distributed across the chain strands. To compensate for uneven load distribution, the sling chain with shortening claw is used. This provides greater flexibility and safety.

Types of Chain Slings

Endless chain slings (also known as chain rings) are used for specialized lifting operations that require a continuous, flexible chain without a defined beginning or end link — for example, wrapping around and securely lifting round or irregularly shaped loads.

Another characteristic that differentiates lifting chains is the grade classification. The grade determines the load capacity of the chain and thus how much weight it can lift. The higher the grade, the more weight the chain can carry at the same thickness. For example, Grade 10 chains can lift up to 25% more load than Grade 8 chains of the same diameter.
