Heavy-duty cylinders

Heavy-duty cylinders are particularly robust, large hydraulic cylinders that are specifically designed to withstand extreme forces. These heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders are used wherever components weighing several tonnes need to be lifted, moved, or supported safely

Thanks to their solid steel construction, reinforced piston guides, and high pressure resistance, they are among the most powerful types of cylinders in industrial applications. Depending on the model, heavy-duty cylinders achieve impressive load capacities – from 20 to well over 1,000 tonnes.
While compact models reliably handle 20–50 t, larger versions provide lifting capacities of 100 t, 200 t, or even 500 t. Special cylinders for particularly demanding lifting tasks, such as those used in bridge construction, bridge bearings, heavy transport, or the steel and offshore industries, can move 1,000 t and more.

This makes heavy-duty cylinders ideal wherever conventional hydraulic cylinders reach their limits and maximum power reserves, stability, and safety are required.

How heavy-duty cylinders work

The operating principle of a heavy-duty hydraulic cylinder is based on the controlled conversion of hydraulic pressure into lifting force. By supplying high-pressure hydraulic oil, the piston extends and powerfully lifts the load.

Reinforced housings, high-load seals, and optimized piston guidance ensure that a heavy-duty hydraulic cylinder operates reliably even under extreme loads. Depending on the model, the cylinders are designed as single-acting or double-acting.

The reason heavy-duty cylinders can lift significantly higher forces than standard hydraulic cylinders lies primarily in their design: they feature substantially larger piston areas and operate at higher working pressures, generating much greater lifting force. At the same time, reinforced wall thicknesses, robust guides, and high-load seals ensure that a heavy-duty hydraulic cylinder remains stable and safe even under loads of several tonnes. Our cylinders come from the leading manufacturer Enerpac, which stands for the highest quality and durability.

Comparison with other hydraulic cylinders from Globus Hebetechnik

Globus Hebetechnik offers a wide range of hydraulic cylinder types, each designed for specific applications:

  • Low-profile cylinders: Ideal for extremely low installation heights, but with lower power reserves than a heavy-duty hydraulic cylinder.
  • Hollow piston cylinders: Suitable for pulling and clamping operations thanks to the through-hole piston – less suitable for maximum compressive forces.
  • Lightweight aluminium cylinders: Highly portable, but not comparable to a robust heavy-duty cylinder.
  • Multi-purpose cylinders: Versatile in use, but not designed for extreme peak loads.
  • Telescopic cylinders: Offer long stroke lengths, but without the force density of a heavy-duty hydraulic cylinder.

Heavy-duty cylinders therefore stand out due to their exceptional load capacity, maximum force transmission, and durable construction.

Finding the right heavy-duty cylinder – what matters

To select the optimal heavy-duty hydraulic cylinder, customers should consider several factors:

  • Load capacity: The maximum load defines the required cylinder class.
  • Stroke height: Relevant for the desired lifting or supporting of components.
  • Design & space constraints: Determine whether a compact or large heavy-duty cylinder can be used.
  • Single-acting or double-acting: Double-acting models allow precise return stroke movements.
  • Pump compatibility: The hydraulic pump and large hydraulic cylinder must match in terms of pressure and oil volume.

Applications of heavy-duty cylinders

A heavy-duty cylinder is used wherever large forces need to be generated in a controlled manner. Typical application areas include:

Bridge and steel construction
Machinery and plant assembly
Heavy transport and lifting technology
Precision positioning of large machine components
Professional repair and maintenance in large-scale industrial facilities
Reliable support and lifting operations in construction and industry

They are particularly suitable for tasks where conventional hydraulic cylinders reach their limits.

Discover the complete hydraulic product range at Globus Hebetechnik

To ensure optimal use of your heavy-duty cylinders, Globus Hebetechnik offers a wide product portfolio that reliably complements every application. For powerful and consistent generation of the required operating pressure, a range of hydraulic pumps is available – from manually operated models for flexible use to electric or pneumatic pumps for repetitive tasks under high loads. This allows even large heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders to be controlled with precision.

For demanding lifting, pressing, and straightening tasks, our hydraulic presses provide an ideal extension to your system. Complementary hydraulic accessories such as pressure gauges, distributors, quick couplings, or robust support plates ensure additional safety and efficiency in daily operation – especially when high forces need to be transmitted in a targeted and controlled manner.

When heavy components need to be transported, repositioned, or aligned with millimetre precision, suitable products are available in the lifting means category. These include shackles, lifting slings, and lifting points, all of which can be easily combined with your heavy-duty cylinder to form a powerful overall system.

If you have any questions about selecting the ideal components, our team will be happy to assist you at any time. You can reach us via info@glds.de or by phone at +49 (0) 2103 9442 0.
